The short answer

Magnesium is not a sleeping pill, and there is no authorised health claim in the UK that says magnesium helps you sleep. Any brand telling you otherwise is either not paying attention or hoping you aren't.

What magnesium is authorised to do is a longer and more interesting list, and one of those things - contributing to a reduction of tiredness and fatigue - is probably closer to what you're actually after than "makes you sleep" ever was.

This article explains what magnesium is permitted to claim in the UK, what the research does and doesn't show, how much you actually need according to the NHS rather than an American health site, and why the form on the label matters more than the milligrams on the front.

 

 


What magnesium is authorised to claim

In Great Britain, health claims on food and supplements have to come from an authorised register. A manufacturer can't simply describe what it thinks a nutrient does. The wording is fixed.

For magnesium, the authorised claims are that it contributes to:

  • a reduction of tiredness and fatigue
  • electrolyte balance
  • normal energy-yielding metabolism
  • normal functioning of the nervous system
  • normal muscle function
  • normal protein synthesis
  • normal psychological function
  • the maintenance of normal bones and teeth
  • a role in the process of cell division

Read that list again and notice what isn't on it. There is no claim about sleep. None about insomnia, anxiety, stress, migraine, cramps or restless legs. Those are conditions, and a food supplement that presents itself as treating a condition stops being a food supplement in the eyes of UK law.

This is why you'll see careful brands talk about evening routines and winding down, and careless ones talk about knocking you out.

 

 


So why is magnesium sold for sleep everywhere?

Because the association is real in people's heads, and because there is genuine research interest, even if the evidence doesn't support a claim.

The honest state of the evidence looks roughly like this. Observational studies - the kind that look at populations and find patterns - have reported associations between magnesium status and self-reported sleep quality. Controlled trials, which are the ones that establish cause, have been smaller, fewer, and mixed. Reviews of the field tend to conclude the same thing: interesting, not settled, more and better research needed.

That is not the same as "it works." It is also not the same as "it does nothing." It's genuinely uncertain, and anyone presenting it as resolved in either direction is overstating their case.

Where magnesium has a firmer footing is the tiredness and fatigue claim. That one is authorised, which means it has been assessed and accepted on the evidence. If what you're actually experiencing is being worn out rather than lying awake, that's the more relevant end of the list.

How much magnesium do you actually need?

UK guidance, from the NHS, is:

  • Men aged 19 to 64: 300mg a day
  • Women aged 19 to 64: 270mg a day

You'll often see higher numbers online - 400 to 420mg for men, 310 to 320mg for women. Those are American figures. They're not wrong, they're just not ours, and a surprising number of UK supplement blogs quote them without noticing.

There's a third number that causes confusion: 375mg. That's the Nutrient Reference Value, the figure used on labels so that percentages mean the same thing across every product on the shelf. It isn't a target and it isn't a limit. It's a measuring stick.

On upper limits, the NHS is clear: "Having 400mg or less a day of magnesium from supplements is unlikely to cause any harm." It also notes that "taking high doses of magnesium (more than 400mg) for a short time can cause diarrhoea."

Most of us get some magnesium from food - spinach, nuts, wholemeal bread and pulses are all decent sources - so a supplement is topping up rather than starting from zero.

 

 



The form matters more than the number on the front

This is the part most labels skate over. Magnesium is never sold on its own; it's bound to something else, and what it's bound to affects how much your body can actually use and how your stomach handles it.

Magnesium oxide is the cheapest and the most common. It contains a lot of magnesium by weight, which makes for an impressive number on the front of the tub, but it is poorly absorbed and is the form most associated with digestive upset. If a product is very cheap and doesn't say which form it uses, this is usually why.

Magnesium bisglycinate - also sold as magnesium glycinate or diglycinate, which are names for the same compound - is magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine. It's a chelated form, generally well tolerated, and the one most often chosen where digestive comfort matters.

Magnesium malate binds magnesium to malic acid, which occurs naturally in fruit and is involved in energy production in the body.

Magnesium taurate binds it to taurine, an amino acid.

You'll find plenty of confident claims online about exact absorption percentages for each form. Treat precise-sounding figures with suspicion unless they're sourced - a lot of the numbers that circulate in supplement marketing trace back to nothing in particular.

What can be said more plainly is that chelated forms are generally better absorbed than oxide, and generally gentler.

When should you take it?

There's no official best time, and no evidence strong enough to be dogmatic about it.

What matters more is consistency. Magnesium isn't something you take when you feel you need it; it's a nutrient your body uses continuously. Taking it at the same time each day, so you actually remember, will do more than optimising the hour.

Taking it with food can help if you find supplements sit heavily. Beyond that, pick a time you'll stick to.

Always follow the dose on the label of whatever you're taking, and don't exceed it.

Who should be careful

Speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking a magnesium supplement if you have kidney problems, as reduced kidney function affects how the body clears magnesium. The same applies if you take prescription medication, since magnesium can interact with some medicines including certain antibiotics.

Food supplements are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women without professional advice, and they should never be used as a substitute for a varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
